Vision Boarding is MORE than cutting and pasting

Creating a vision board has certainly been talked about recently.  I have found it is SO much more than just cutting out pictures and gluing them down.  If you would like to create a vision and a vision board, here are 10 steps to take.  Making a vision board truly can help to get you “unstuck.”    Making a vision board is a great exercise to get you excited and ‘fired-up’ about what you want in your life.  Here are some steps to help you:

1.  Determine your current perspective of your life.   In other words,  how do you view your life right now?    Do any of these sound familiar?

  • I can’t make a change now.
  • I can’t make money doing my passion.
  • I don’t even know where to start.
  • I should be grateful for what I have.
  • I don’t have enough time to do something different.
Are you sick and tired of being in your current perspective?
Is it just keeping you STUCK?
How is it serving you?
Isn’t it about time to choose a new perspective?

  2.  Choose a new perspective.  It’s that simple.  This is when you get to choose the perspective you would like to stand in strongly.  Here are some choices:

  • Life is full of possibilities.
  • I have faith.
  • I have courage and I walk through fear.
  • I trust myself.
  • I follow what makes me feel most alive.
  • I trust my heart.
  • I take one step at a time.
  • I follow what comes to me naturally.

Stand in this new perspective.  Feel empowered.  Think about what will get created from this new perspective.  Doesn’t this one feel much better?

3.  Make a list of “What I Don’t Want”

I don’t want ____________________.

I don’t want ____________________.

I don’t want ____________________.  Just keep writing until you are done.

4.  Make a list of “What I Do Want”

I want _______________________________________.

I want _______________________________________.

I want _______________________________________.  Again, just keep writing until you are done.

5.  Sit and DREAM.  Dream about what you want, picture it, see it, believe it is all possible.  It is helpful to create a space for you to dream.  You can simply pick a favorite chair, or sit on your front porch or lay in bed in the morning and dream before you get out of bed.  If it has been a long time since you have dreamed, just begin to do it again.  It is like a muscle, the more you use it, the stronger your ‘dream tool’ will get.

6.  Write out your dream.  Write in the present tense and with emotion.

It can sound something like this:

I love my life.  It feels so good to _______________________________and ________________________.  I am finally getting to _________________________.  I am so excited about______________________________.  When I get up in the morning, I _________________________________.  I am very grateful for ____________________________ and __________________________.  Life is good.  Standing in the “real me” feels great.  Having _______________________________and ___________________________________ in my life is truly amazing.  I enjoy ____________________________________and ________________________.

7.  Sit and look through magazines.  Cut out pictures or words of what you want in your life.  Have fun with it.  Notice what images appeal to you.  Are you choosing certain areas of your life, such as:

  • health
  • career
  • family and friends
  • fun and relaxation
  • relationships
  • money

8.  Glue your pictures and words to a poster board.  You can also glue them to a box and make a vision box.  It is fun to add some decorations such as: ribbons, stars, glitter, bows.  Get creative with it.  Bring out the child in you!

9.  Come up with one action step to move towards one thing you want in your life.  Make it specific and measurable.  Attach a date to your step so you will know when it needs to be completed.  It can be helpful to do this exercise with a partner or in a group.

10.  Declare your action step to someone.  If I am doing vision boarding in a group, I have one person at a time tell about their vision board and DECLARE an action step in front of the group.  This is very powerful.

It can sound like this:

I say “NO” to doing things I don’t want to do.

I say “YES” to taking time for me.

My action step is:  I will get a massage and I will do this by June 2nd.

Put your vision board where you can see it everday.  Keep taking steps to live your vision.  Life is short.  Live life fully.  Believe it yourself and believe anything is possible, because it is!

Vision boards are a fabulous way to really focus on what you want your life to look like and your advice about specific and measurable actions steps is right on target. Small steps taken every day will get you where you want to be.

  3. Hi Bonnie,
I am so “in favor” of small steps because they get us there just as well as the big ones! I learned this in my leadership training with CTI when I watched a friend of mine take small steps while doing ropes 70′ up in the trees. It’s great to hear from you.
